Prayers for Bible Sunday, Oct 2018

Intercessions for the week beginning Sunday 28 October 2018

O Lord, we recognise your presence among us, and in this time of prayer we bring our needs to you.

This Bible Sunday we ask for understanding of your teachings through the scriptures so that we may be equipped to do your work. We pray that your word will be made known throughout the world so that everyone can read it in their own language. We give thanks for the work of organisations such as the Bible Society and Wycliffe UK which aim to make the Bible more accessible across the globe, and the Bible Reading Fellowship which encourages us all to read the Bible regularly.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

We give our thanks and praise for the world we live in, and for the wonders of creation as we see the changing colours of autumn and the continuing new growth in our gardens and fields after the hot summer months. We remember all those who suffer lack of food when climate changes mean there is insufficient rain for crops to grow. Let us continue the spirit of harvest - sharing and remembering those in our area who rely on food banks and Stonepillow.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

We pray for our Bishops and Archdeacons and for all our clergy and give thanks that we can worship you freely. We pray for those injured in the American synagogue yesterday when a gunman opened fire, and for the families of those who died.

We pray for all those who are in the holy land on the pilgrimage led by The Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, to the major sites associated with the life of Jesus. We join with others as we pray for Palestinian Christians.

We are sad that in another part of the Middle East, in the Yemen, so many millions are suffering and in need of healthcare, with many suffering severe malnutrition. We pray for an end to the civil war.

So we pray for peace and unity between all those of different faiths throughout the world.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

We pray for the sick in the parish and others know to each of us.
Be present to them through the support of families and friends and in the care of doctors and nurses, and fill them with the warmth of your love now and always.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

We give thanks for those who take up challenges to raise funds for charity, and today remember our parishioners who are in Dublin walking a marathon to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

As we approach Remembrance Sunday and see the many displays of poppies to mark the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War, we give thanks for all those who currently serve in the armed forces at home and abroad in the service of their country. At this time we pray for those who have lost loved ones in times of war, but also all those we miss particularly at this time of year and as the Christmas season approaches. We give thanks for all our memories

Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

We remember that you Lord, walk beside us, You live inside us and You watch over us. May your grace lead us to live lives worthy of you and your son.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen
