News and Events

Open the Book is a charity affiliated to the Bible Society, aiming to bring stories from the bible before primary school children. A few of us attended one of their training courses the other day. The Rector has approached Westbourne School, whose head teacher will arrange for parents to be given details of this initiative, and it is hoped that we will be able to start there next term in April. Other venues may also open up for us. We need several more volunteers. A further starting course is arranged in Brighton on 25 March. If you could be a part of this parish initiative, contact Thomas Blower, Peter Bailey or Michael Driver.

Wanting to be confirmed? The Deanery Confirmation is on 2 May 2019. Please speak to the Rector now if you or your child wish to be confirmed.

Friday 8 March, 2019 - Another superb Westbourne Supper LectureTracy Borman, Palace Historian, will introduce her first novel “The King’s Witch: James 1 & the Gunpowder Plot” in the Parish Hall. Supper at 7.00pm. Tickets £12.50  from Susie or Rona Musker.

Intercessors: one way in which lay members of the congregation can enrich worship is by leading intercessions in the 9.30 communion service. If you might be interested, please get in touch either with the Rector or with Andrew Turner or Amy Turner. A deanery training event is set for 10am for 10.30am, Sat 9 Feb (very soon!) – please tell the Rector if you wish to attend

Lent Groups for EVERYONE. We shall arrange 4 house groups to meet during Lent for five sessions. Each can choose from two Chichester Diocesan courses: "Hear the Word of The Lord", written for the Year of the Bible (2017) or "Living Christ" compiled for the current Year of Vocation. If you could offer to lead a group, please contact the Rector or Roddy Russell. More information about the groups will be available in Church next week and in the hall after the main Sunday service.

Retreat to Alton Abbey, near Alton - 4.00pm Friday 15 March to 2.00pm Sunday 17 March 2019.  Cost £85 - bring your own towels and toiletries. Lift sharing will be arranged. Only four places left. Sign-up sheet in Welcome Area at St John’s. More information from Jane Stuttard.

Marmalade time again. Would you try to provide 6 jars of marmalade to help us have another Marmalade Festival this year? Just get the fruit in the pan and stir up some tasty marmalade.  In the Parish Hall on Saturday 2 March 2019 from 9.00am to 12noon - marmalade in advance would be lovely. Andrew Turner.

50:50 Draw  The winning numbers for January are 1st No. 54, 2nd No. 21 and 3rd No. 35.

Year of Vocation cards available in the Churches for all: to use in compiling of a spiritual ‘Rule of Life’. These are personal to the user, and build up during these six months. In Advent we were invited to identify patterns by which to shape our Prayer and Penitence; and in the Christmas season, we are asked to consider how we can respond to those in need, nearby and further away. On reaching decisions prayerfully, we may commit them these cards: our private ‘rule of life’.
