Deanery Evensong - July 2018

Westbourne choristers were part of the special amalgamated choir at Deanery Evensong in July 2018.

A total of 10 singers, including St John the Baptist’s Director of Music Stewart Taylor, joined choristers from other churches at the service held at St Nicholas, West Thorney. The Westbourne Deanery represents the Anglican churches in western Sussex from the Downs to the sea.

The musical settings included ‘Magnificat’ and ‘Nunc Dimittis’ set by Charles Villiers Stanford in B flat and Richard Ayleward’s Preces and Responses. The combined churches choir sang the beautiful anthem ‘God be in my head’ set to music by Philip Wilby.

Clergy together with ministry teams from parishes across the Westbourne Deanery were also involved in the service celebrating all the work that takes place in and through churches in the area.

The Rt Revd Mark Sowerby presided at the service which coincided with the week of his ninth anniversary as Bishop of Horsham.

Bishop Mark said: "What is integral to being a Christian is to be sent...to share in the mission." He said Christians were 'commissioned to bear the light of Christ into the world. To bear witness to Jesus Christ in everything we do... we are all sent to shine the light of Christ in the world."

He encouraged the congregation to not take the blessing 'as a dismissal but as a commission to love and share the Lord."

The Bishop’s theme was echoed in the words of the anthem:
“God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking”
